HDD locating systems
The Mag X walk-over locators from Underground Magnetics, with Echo and Armor VTX sondes.
Locating from Underground Magnetics
A walk-over locating system tells the driller where the drill head is: its depth, pitch and roll, and where it is heading. HDD Gear supplies the Mag X series from Underground Magnetics — three locators that share the same frequency range and telemetry, and differ in display, GPS and the sondes they run.
Every Mag X system works on 16 frequencies from 0.325 to 41 kHz, including the sub-kHz rebar frequencies for work under reinforced concrete and wire mesh. Both the frequency and the power level are changed while the sonde is down the hole, and telemetry reaches the display at the rig from up to 900 m. Bore logging is built in: every rod is recorded, utility crossings are added as you expose them, and the finished report is e-mailed from the display or synced to the UMmaps web portal.
The sonde decides the range. The Echo series runs from the 16 cm Echo ST for tracing existing conduit to the Echo 110 with 110 m depth and data range. The Armor VTX sondes have a steel body, three power levels and all 16 frequencies, reach up to 120 m and are used with the Mag X GEO.
- 16 frequencies from 0.325 to 41 kHz
- Telemetry up to 900 m on four radio channels
- Frequency and power level changed down-hole
- Built-in bore logging, synced to UMmaps
- Locators IP65, sondes IP67 — accuracy ±5 %
- Sondes with a range of up to 120 m
The Mag X series

7″ colour touchscreen and integrated RTK GPS, accurate to 1–3 cm and with elevation. Logs pitch, roll, temperature, depth and GPS position for every rod, records utility crossings with type, position and depth, and creates and shares the report straight from the locator.

The most powerful Mag X, paired with the Echo 75XF sonde. The Solid Core 3D Antenna Cluster extends the range on the sub-kHz frequencies, so you can stay low in frequency where there is interference.

The core functions in a simpler package: a stand-up locator with a 4″ reflective LCD, a 7″ Android touchscreen at the rig and tracking on the fly for fast everyday locating.
